Ozone therapy

Ozone (O₃), a highly reactive molecule consisting of three oxygen atoms, has been of interest to scientists and medical professionals for decades due to its potential therapeutic properties. Ozone therapy, a treatment that uses ozone to treat a variety of health conditions, is becoming increasingly popular in medicine, cosmetics, and dentistry .

Due to its pronounced oxidizing properties, ozone can be toxic, but with proper and controlled application, it is successfully used for a wide range of treatments – from disinfection and stimulating tissue regeneration to improving circulation and strengthening the immune system.

Application of ozone in medicine and cosmetics

Today, ozone is used in various medical and cosmetic procedures. In medicine, it is used to treat infections, accelerate wound healing, improve circulation , and as an additional therapy for chronic diseases . During the COVID-19 pandemic, research showed that low concentrations of ozone can neutralize viral particles, which prompted its use for disinfecting hospital rooms.

In cosmetics, ozone is used in skin treatments, including the treatment of acne, eczema, and psoriasis, thanks to its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Ozonated oils and creams are also applied to improve skin elasticity and reduce signs of aging

Ozone (O₃) is a molecule made up of three oxygen atoms. It is a bluish-colored gas with strong oxidizing properties. It is highly reactive and is used for disinfection, water purification, and medical purposes.

Historical development and first medical applications of ozone

Ozone was first discovered in the mid-19th century, and its therapeutic uses were investigated by German chemist Christian Friedrich Schönbein. During World War I, ozone was used to disinfect soldiers’ wounds due to its antiseptic properties. In the late 19th century, the first ozone generators were developed, and in the early 20th century, ozone began to be used in medicine to treat infections and improve circulation.

Ozone application methods

Ozone therapy can be performed in different ways, depending on the indication and desired therapeutic effect.

Medical methods of application:

  1. Intravenous ozone therapy (MAH – major autohemotherapy) :
    • The patient’s blood is taken, enriched with medical ozone, and returned to the bloodstream.
    • It improves the immune response, circulation and detoxification of the body.
    • It is used for viral infections, autoimmune diseases and chronic fatigue.
  2. Small autohemotherapy :
    • A small amount of the patient’s blood mixed with medical ozone is injected intramuscularly.
    • It activates the immune system and is used to revitalize the body.
  3. Rectal ozone insufflation :
    • Ozone is introduced in gaseous form through the rectum, which allows for a systemic effect similar to intravenous administration.
    • It is used for digestive system problems, irritable bowel syndrome, and liver detoxification.
  4. Vaginal ozone insufflation :
    • It is used for bacterial and fungal infections and vaginal inflammation.
  5. Intraarticular application of ozone :
    • Medical ozone is injected directly into joints to reduce pain and inflammation in arthritis, osteoarthritis, and sports injuries.
  6. Local application (ozonated creams and oils) :
    • They are applied to the skin to treat wounds, scars, acne, and psoriasis.
  7. Ozone in dentistry :
    • It is used for disinfection of the oral cavity, treatment of periodontitis and decontamination of caries.

Intravenous ozone administration, especially large-scale autohemotherapy (MAH), is considered the most effective form of ozone therapy. The procedure takes about 15 minutes and requires a single intravenous injection, and is available at EO2 Polyclinic.

Cosmetic application methods:

  1. Ozonated oils and serums :
    • They are used for anti-aging treatments, acne treatments and skin hydration.
  2. Ozone therapy for hair and scalp :
    • It improves scalp circulation, reduces hair loss and stimulates new hair growth.
  3. Ozone in facial treatments :
    • It cleanses pores, reduces inflammation and improves skin texture.
  4. Ozone in anti-cellulite treatments :
    • It helps break down fat deposits and improves microcirculation.

Scientific research

Numerous studies support the use of ozone for medical purposes. Studies have shown that ozone therapy can:

  • Improve immune system function – stimulates the production of white blood cells and neutralizes bacterial enzymes.
  • Accelerate wound healing – increases tissue oxygenation and stimulates the formation of new blood vessels.
  • Helps with circulatory system diseases – improves oxygen flow to the body and can reduce the risk of thrombosis.
  • Reduce pain in orthopedic conditions – ozone therapy is used for herniated discs, arthritis, and sports injuries.
  • Destroy bacteria, viruses, and fungi – due to its strong antiseptic properties, it is used to treat infections and inflammatory diseases.

Conclusion

Ozone therapy is a therapeutic method that offers a wide range of possibilities in medical and cosmetic treatments. The antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and regenerative properties of ozone make it a powerful tool for improving health and quality of life , while in cosmetics it provides natural and effective skin and hair care. Further research is expected to standardize therapeutic protocols, so that ozone therapy becomes even more accepted in conventional medicine.

A particularly interesting line of research involves combining ozone with other therapies, such as stem cells, hyperbaric oxygenation, and photodynamic therapy . Also, the development of advanced ozone generators and personalized therapeutic protocols could increase the effectiveness and safety of ozone therapy. Given the growing interest and research to date, ozone therapy could become an important addition to modern medical and cosmetic treatments.

Although ozone therapy offers many benefits and advantages, it is important to note that it is not suitable for everyone . As with any therapy, there are contraindications and limitations . People with certain medical conditions, such as those with respiratory problems or allergies to ozone, pregnant women, patients with thrombocytopenia, favism, transplanted organs and overactive thyroid should avoid this therapy. It is also important to carry out ozone therapy under the supervision of a qualified professional in order to avoid potential risks and achieve the desired therapeutic effect.
